The IREC’s Solar Energy Materials and Systems Group to coordinate the Marie Curie IAPP INDUCIS project as part of the EU’s FP7 ‘People’ Work Programme

The IREC’s Solar Energy Materials and Systems Group has been invited to conduct negotiations with the European Commission for the preparation of the Grant Agreement corresponding to the research project INDUCIS in the framework of the 2011 Marie Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) Call.

INDUCIS proposes an ambitious research programme in collaboration with the French photovoltaic company NEXCIS. It is to focus on the development and industrial implementation of advanced photovoltaic (PV) technologies for the fabrication of low-cost, high-efficiency Cu (In,Ga)(S,Se)2 (CIGS) thin-film solar cells and modules. The project aims to exploit the potential of CIGS-based cells for achieving high-efficiency devices together with that of electrodeposition (ED) based processes for the low-cost industrial implementation of PV technologies. Increase of the competitiveness of these technologies requires for a significant effort on the improvement of the efficiency of the devices, which in turn implies the need for a detailed characterisation of the processes and the identification of the main loss mechanisms in the cells.

Researchers from the IREC’s Lighting Group have published the results of their work in the prestigious journal Optics Express.

IREC SiliciResearchers from the IREC’s Lighting Group have published the results of their work in the prestigious journal Optics Express. They have developed a new silicon-based, CMOS-compatible material that can be used for the manufacture of white light and lighting applications in general.

The results of the study, in which Dr Josep Carreras (Group Leader of Lighting) took part in collaboration with researchers from the University of Barcelona, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the University of Havana and the California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC), show that this material can be designed to emit white light close to the wavelength of the human eye’s maximum sensitivity (high luminous efficacy), whilst maintaining an excellent quality of colour reproduction. This is the first study to propose the implementation of solid-state sources for general lighting based on CMOS-compatible technologies. If further work is carried out to increase the current luminosity, this would result in a dramatic reduction in mass-production and scalability costs for the omnipresent semiconductor industry.

Europe-wide Green eMotion Initiative to pave the way for electromobility

IREC GREEN EMOTIONThe European Commission has kicked off a 4 year cross-European initiative to promote electromobility. The 42 partners in the initiative comprising industrial companies and automobile manufacturers, utilities, municipalities, universities, and technology and research institutions are to input, exchange and expand their know- how and experience in selected regions within Europe.

“Electromobility will make an important contribution toward reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Green eMotion is intended to ensure the fast-track success of electric vehicles,” said Siim Kallas, Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner responsible for Transport. The project volume has been budgeted at EUR 42 million, of which the EU will contribute as much as EUR 24 million.

Prof. Joan Ramón Morante shall take part, as co-Chairman, in the organisation of the “Bilateral Conference on Energy”

IREC XARMAEProf. Joan Ramón Morante, Head of the Advanced Materials for Energy Area at the IREC, shall take part, as co-Chairman, in the organisation of the “Bilateral Conference on Energy” organised jointly by the firms MRS (USA) and E-MRS (Europe).
 

The conference shall be held in the French city of Nice from 10 to 12 May and is part of the activities scheduled for the EMRS/IUMRS ICAM 2011 Spring Meeting, organized by the renowned European Materials Research Society (EMRS) and the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS).
