The XARMAE and the IREC to organise the workshop “New Trends and Technologies for Photovoltaic Energy”

IREC XARMAEThe Xarmae (Reference Network in Advanced Materials for Energy) and the IREC (Catalonia Institute for Energy Research) are organising the workshop on “New Trends and Technologies for Photovoltaic Energy”.
 
This workshop is run by Dr Joan Ramón Morante, the head of the Department of Advanced Materials for Energy at the IREC. It will be attended by specialists in photovoltaic energy from leading international universities, research centres and the world of industry. They will be able to give an overview of the current status of this technology by focusing on the technologies that are currently available on the market and by discussing future trends. This will give research groups, universities and industry the opportunity to fully exploit future synergies.

IREC and Vortex sign an agreement for the estimation of wind at the future ZEFIR Test Station for offshore wind turbines.

28th October, 2010 – The Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya (IREC) and the online wind modelling services company, Vortex, have signed a cooperation agreement in order to carry out studies to estimate the wind field that shall contribute to the development of the offshore wind energy R&D plant, ZÈFIR Test Station. ZÈFIR Test Station, which shall be located off the coast of Tarragona, shall be an international investigation facility used for the testing of offshore wind turbines in deep water and its installation shall be carried out in two phases.
 
In the first phase of the ZÈFIR Test Station project, a maximum of four wind turbines shall be installed, anchored to seabed at a distance of 3.5 kilometres from the coast, with a total power output of below 20 MW and, subsequently, in the second phase, 8 floating wind turbines shall be installed with a maximum power output of 50 MW, 30 kilometres from the coast. The first phase is expected to enter into service in 2012 and the second phase in 2014.

ICAEN, CIEMAT and IREC Sign Agreement to Implement Fusion Energy Technologies Programme

IrecThe Catalan Institute for Energy (ICAEN), the Research Centre for Energy, Environment and Technology (CIEMAT) and the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) today signed an agreement to create a research and technology development programme in the area of nuclear fusion energy technologies.
 
One of the initiative’s main goals is to promote the participation of the maximum number of Catalan businesses in bidding for programmes to supply equipment and services for the ITER project being built in Cadarache (France). In this regard, the participation of the Catalan industrial network is of major importance because of the presence in Barcelona of the European Union’s Fusion for Energy (F4E) Agency, responsible for managing the project’s equipment and services purchases.
