The State Department of Climatic Change has resolved to grant Spain’s support to IREC’s project “ZÈFIR Floating Med Wind Plant”, of floating offshore wind turbines, in the European call of Program NER 300.

The project has obtained the highest score of a list of 16 submitted proposals.

The “ZÈFIR Floating Med Wind Plant” project, that consists of setting-up a 25 MW offshore Wind Turbine Test Station in the Mediterranean territorial waters, opposite the coast of Tarragona, composed of 5 floating wind turbines, has been selected by the State Department of Climatic Change, from the Environment and Rural and Marine Environment Ministry, to represent Spain in the European Commission NER 3001 1call.

Within the framework of demonstration projects Categories of renewable energy innovative technologies (FER), IREC’s proposal has been submitted to the category of wind power projects and the subcategory “Deep-sea floating wind power system, with a nominal capacity of 25 MW”.

IREC participates in the conference Wind to Wheel

W2W 2011 is the first symposium that aims to provide a chance to discuss the challenges of the electric wind power system and the challenges of integrating the electric vehicles to the smart grids.

This means a change in the way of exploiting the system with intelligent network (SmartGrids), communication networks, power electronics and ENERTRONIC.

The IREC awarded the Valortec prize by the Government of Catalonia for its pioneering Lightelligence project in light reproduction

ValortecThe device is able to record and register environmental light in real time and to simulate sunlight or the northern lights.

Barcelona,  May 2011.- The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) has been awarded the Valortec prize by the Government of Catalonia for its Lightelligence project. It comprises a LED lighting device that makes it possible to measure and record the light spectre of an environment and reproduce it in real time.

The project was awarded the prize in the best Business Marketing Plan of a Technology or Patent category. The prize is sponsored by the agency that promotes the competiveness of Catalan businesses, ACC1Ó, which depends on the Ministry of Enterprise and Labour of the Government of Catalonia.

The IREC has already developed the first prototype of the Lightelligence device, which makes it possible to simulate natural light such as the sunrise or the northern lights in any space. It could be said that Lightelligence is to light what an MP3 player is to sound (music).

The IREC’s Solar Energy Materials and Systems Group to coordinate the Marie Curie IAPP INDUCIS project as part of the EU’s FP7 ‘People’ Work Programme

The IREC’s Solar Energy Materials and Systems Group has been invited to conduct negotiations with the European Commission for the preparation of the Grant Agreement corresponding to the research project INDUCIS in the framework of the 2011 Marie Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) Call.

INDUCIS proposes an ambitious research programme in collaboration with the French photovoltaic company NEXCIS. It is to focus on the development and industrial implementation of advanced photovoltaic (PV) technologies for the fabrication of low-cost, high-efficiency Cu (In,Ga)(S,Se)2 (CIGS) thin-film solar cells and modules. The project aims to exploit the potential of CIGS-based cells for achieving high-efficiency devices together with that of electrodeposition (ED) based processes for the low-cost industrial implementation of PV technologies. Increase of the competitiveness of these technologies requires for a significant effort on the improvement of the efficiency of the devices, which in turn implies the need for a detailed characterisation of the processes and the identification of the main loss mechanisms in the cells.
