Project title: Solar energy harvesting with two-photon processes
Host Institution: Catalonia Institute for Energy Research - IREC
Group: Nanomaterials
Group Leader: Andreu Cabot

Call for Applications: R1 Pre-Doctoral (FPI)

The Nanomaterials Group announces a PhD Position available for a highly motivated candidate to work in the Project Solar energy harvesting with two-photon processes - SEHTOP

The SEHTOP project develops nanomaterials for the conversation of solar energy into electric (photovoltaics) and solar (photocatalysis) energy. These nanomaterials will allow a novel scheme of solar energy utilization which makes use of a wider interval of the solar spectrum than in usual systems by combining two electronic excitations produced by photons of relatively low energy to achieve the excitation of one electron by an energy larger than that of each of the two photons absorbed. This two-photon process is similar to the one behind natural photosynthesis (the Z-scheme), but adds the possibility of achieving the complete excitation as well with only one photon having enough energy. In this way one obtains an important electric or chemical potential with a larger number of excited electrons than could be achieved with a traditional semiconductor.
To this aim the project will use different materials which according to quantum calculations can produce an in-gap band allowing a two-photon process. These systems will be tested as thin film photovoltaic or photoelectrochemical cells, as powders in photocatalytic generation of hydrogen or as luminescent up-converters, their efficiency measured by rigorous methods and interpreted by a combined theoretical/experimental approach.
The candidate will carry out a multidisciplinary activity with the final aim to produce such nanomaterials and test their functionality.
The candidate must have a bachelor degree in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science or equivalent. Previous experience in the preparation, manipulation, characterization and use of nanomaterials will be very valuable for the position.
