The Solar Energy Materials and Systems Group (SEMS) announces two pre-doctoral position in the frame of the SOLAR-WIN Project, in the research line of:

Development of advanced optical based methodologies for fast and high accuracy composition/structural characterization of chalcogenide-based devices for photovoltaic applications.

Position description:
The pre-doctoral positions will be developed in the framework of the European Solar-Win project. This project proposes the development of next generation PV Solar windows that are based in the integration of customised CuInGaSe2 (CIGS) PV modules, providing with a unique transparent and electricity-generating window that merges the functionality of a PV module and a window in one. Achievement of the project objectives will require:

1) Optimisation of CIGS PV processes for production of customised CIGS modules adapted to the Solar-Win transparent solar windows: this will require a deep fundamental characterization of the materials and devices properties in terms of the physicochemical and optoelectronics properties, and their correlation with the technological process parameters;

2) Implementation and demonstration of innovative methodologies and optical systems compatibles with in-line CIGS PV process monitoring for improvement of the process yield and reliability.

Tasks to develop: The candidates will carry out, with the support of the group, a multidisciplinary scientific activity centred in the deep characterisation of the CIGS processes and devices and in the development of optical based methodologies for the advanced characterization of the compositional/structural properties of the CIGS devices. A special emphasis will be given to the development of methodologies and optical systems suitable for in-line process monitoring, including the development of advanced algorithms based in big-data processing for fast process reliability assessment.

The development of the methodologies and systems and the correlation of the physicochemical properties of the layers with the optoelectronic properties of the devices will provide of high level scientific knowledge compatible with the development of a successful PhD.

Candidate requirements: The candidates need to be in position of a 300 ECTS degree (corresponding to a double degree or to a Bachelor and Master degree) in Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Mathematics, Electronics Engineering, Materials Engineering or equivalent, before the incorporation date, allowing them to enrol in a Doctorate Program.

Previous experience in thin film, in general, and thin films chalcogenide photovoltaic technologies in particular, materials characterization, solid state physics, data processing, and programing will be very well evaluated.

IREC-SEMS description: The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) ( was created on July 2008. Its mission is to become a centre of excellence and an international benchmark organization in the energy sector, through research, technology development and innovation. The ultimate goal of its research activity is to contribute to the sustainable development of society and greater corporate competitiveness. Bearing in mind the principles that motivated the Institute’s creation, IREC has established a framework of reference based on scientific research, technology development and innovation.

The Solar Energy Materials & Systems (SEMS) Group. The SEMS group has a strong background and expertise in the advanced characterization of processes for chalcogenide based thin film photovoltaic technologies as CIGS, with a significant emphasis in the development of non-destructive optical techniques for quality assessment and process monitoring. This includes a relevant activity in the group in the development of methodologies based on Raman scattering and Photoluminescence (PL) techniques for the in-line monitoring of CIGS based processes. Relevant experience in this field include the development and validation at industrial level of multi-wavelength excitation Raman/PL methodologies for the in-line quantitative assessment developed in the frame of the different European projects.

SEMS group support: Infrastructure and technological facilities available at IREC include facilities and capabilities for the production and characterisation of thin film solar cell prototypes. This includes depositions, a complete electrochemical and chemical workshop, reactive thermal treatment equipment, solar simulator (AAA) and spectral response systems for analysis of optoelectronic characteristics of the devices.  

The group has also access and experience in a wide range of advanced materials characterisation techniques including Raman scattering, XRD, TEM (HRTEM, EELS), nanoscopic techniques (AFM, STM), optical techniques (FTIR, UV-VIS spectroscopies, PL), AES, XPS, UPS, and electrical/optoelectronic characterisation tools. 

Additionally the SEMS group offers support for the formation of high level researchers, including the possibility to perform secondments in relevant international institutions and advanced PV industries, participation in international conferences and support for the publications of results in high impact factor journals.
