A new publication at Energy & Environmental Science by the Energy Storage Group

The Energy Storage Group of IREC has published their work entitled “Prototype reactor for highly selective solar-driven CO2 reduction to synthesis gas using nanosized earth-abundant catalysts and silicon photovoltaics” in the prestigious journal Energy & Environmental Science (impact factor 29.518).

The contribution deals with the development of earth-abundant catalyst materials combined with cheap silicon photovoltaics to perform solar-driven CO2 conversion into chemical fuels. Urbain et al. used a cathode based on copper foam coated with nanosized Zn catalyst to perform CO2 reduction to synthesis gas (CO + H2) and coupled it with a silicon based photoanode in a prototype reactor device. This integrated large scale device enabled bias-free solar CO2 conversion to syngas with a solar-to-syngas efficiency of 4.3 %.
