IREC and Normawind sign an agreement for wind study at ZÉFIR Test Station off-shore wind trials plant

Barcelona, 30 december 2010.- The Catalan Institute for Energy Research (IREC) and wind consultancy firm Normawind have signed a collaboration agreement to carry out wind measurement and modelling studies using computational models at the ZÉFIR Test Station off-shore wind trials platform to be located off the coast of Tarragona.

Normawind, a firm that specialises in the design of wind energy installations, will carry out a wind resource forecasting trial and a turbulence calculation at the plant as part of Phase 1 of the project.

The ZÈFIR Test Station will be an international investigation facility used for the testing of offshore wind turbines in deep water and its installation will be carried out in two phases.

In the first phase of the ZÈFIR Test Station project, a maximum of four wind turbines will be installed, anchored to seabed at a distance of 3.5 kilometres from the coast, with a total power output of below 20 MW and, subsequently, in the second phase, 8 floating wind turbines will be installed with a maximum power output of 50 MW, 30 kilometres from the coast. The first phase is expected to enter into service in 2012 and the second phase in 2014.
Following the signing of the deal, IREC managing director Antoni Martínez emphasised the “major interest” companies have shown in taking part in a project which is “very vivid” and which “will be an opportunity for large and small sector companies to create new business”.
Normawind general manager Víctor Cusí highlighted the project’s importance in “providing businesses with long-standing sector experience with the possibility of remaining at the leading edge” and said he was very satisfied with the agreement as it dovetailed perfectly with “our firm’s commitment to R&D programmes”.
About IREC
IREC is the leading centre for research in the energy sector in Catalonia. Created in 2008, it is specialised in Technological Research and Development activities related to saving energy, energy efficiency and renewable energies; more specifically, it has work lines based on technologies related to micro networks, electric vehicles, energy storage, building efficiency, bioenergy and biofuels, and offshore wind energy.
The institute also has an electricity and power electronics area, another aimed at research, design and characterisation of materials for energy, and a third area devoted to social and technical research in the field of energy.
