IREC in the first European Energy Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC)

The Governing Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) met on 16 December in Budapest to designate the first Knowledge Innovation Community (KICs) in sustainable energy. This aknolodgement to exellency has been conceded to InnoEnergy, amongst eight europeen groups. The proposal InnoEnergy is teamed up by 35 eurpean entities; IREC, UPC and ESADE are some of the members of the group in Barcelona.

InnoEnergy is a strongly integrated alliance of reputable players from the education, research and industry sectors. It was created based on long standing links of cooperation as well as the principles of excellence and transformation. The partners have jointly developed a strategy to tackle the weaknesses of the European innovation landscape and aim to be the leading motor for innovation in the field of sustainable energy. The adopted technological approach covers the most challenging areas of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan)  of the European Union and addresses the transition of the system as a whole.

InnoEnergy will systematically produce innovation by creating critical mass and integrating different actors of the knowledge triangle in a sustainable and structured manner. To achieve this, InnoEnergy will be organised and managed as a business. Its installation as a European Company (SE) provides stability and creates self-reinforcing mechanisms leading to sustainability. The managerial processes and mechanisms employed will assure the development and value creation of the alliance. InnoEnergy headquartiers will be in Bruselles and will have six operations centres: Barcelona, Karlsrhue, Grenoble, Stockholm, Eindowen-Leuven and Krakov.  

About the role of IREC in InnoEnergy

IREC as a reference centre on energy research, together with CIEMAT and research groups of UPC, will lead the research projects launched from de co-location of Barcelona.

These projects are aimed towards technologic and innovation development on renewal energies by projects such offshore wind test station; costs reductions and betterments on solar photovoltaic systems efficiency and solar thermoelectric (CSP) and wind turbines verification to increase their work.  

On the other hand these projects are also orientated towards the development of new products and services within energy efficiency by increasing energy efficiency in industrial processes, the reduction of energy demand on buildings and to contribute for small and medium companies to launch their products into more energy efficient devices.

EIT and the Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs)

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is to be a key driver of sustainable European growth and competitiveness through the stimulation of world-leading innovations with a positive impact on economy and society. The mission of the EIT is to grow and capitalize on the innovation capacity and capability of actors from higher education, research, business and entrepreneurship from the EU and beyond through the creation of highly integrated Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs).

According with the declaration of Lisbon, Europe has to improve its innovation capacities; this is the aim of this international inniciative.
