Regional Minister Castells Meets with Businesses Involved in the Zèfir Project

Reinvigorating the Testing Platform for Offshore Wind Energy

Today, the Regional Minister of Economy and Finances, Antoni Castells, met with the Director of the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), Antoni Martínez, and the businesses that have pledged their support and participation in promoting the offshore wind energy testing platform known as Zèfir.

Castells, head of energy policy for the Government of Catalonia, wanted to learn firsthand about the state of the project and to give it his support. The meeting was joined by representatives from Iberdrola, Endesa, Alstom Wind, Acciona, FCC, Prysmian, EDP Renovables, Gas Natural Fenosa, Gamesa, Repower España, Siemens and Comsa Emte.

Zèfir will be an international testing facility in offshore wind energy. The project, promoted by IREC, will be developed in two phases: the first phase is to install up to four wind turbines anchored to the seabed approximately 3.5 kilometers from the coast, with a total power of 20 MW; the second phase consists of installing up to eight floating wind turbines some 30 kilometers from the coast and which together will have up to 50 MW of power. Projected investment in this project is 143 million euros.
