Presentation of the RIS3CAT Community

Last Monday, 25th July, were presented the first RIS3CAT five Communities approved by ACCIO: “INNOAPAT: Comunitat per una “Cadena Alimentària Sana, Segura i Sostenible”; “NEXTHEALTH: Comunitat de solucions multidisciplinàries per als propers reptes de salut”; “MOBILITAT ECO: Comunitat de mobilitat de baixes emissions”; “TEC-SALUT: Comunitat per una tecnologia aplicada a la salut” i “ENERGIA: Comunitat de energia”.

The RIS3CAT energy community, Coordinated by IREC, involve the participation of 45 organizations and the collaboration with 90 entities of the quadruple helix. Its main objectives are to make Catalonia as a centre of knowledge and innovation in energy, promoting the implementation of renewable energy sources, management improvement and boost a more efficient smart grid.

Kickoff meeting of the H2020 Cell3Ditor Project coordinated by IREC

The Nanoionics and Fuel Cells Group of IREC coordinates the H2020 European project “Cost-effective and flexible 3D printed Solid Oxide Fuel Cells stacks for commercial applications- Cell3Ditor” within the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking. The main goal of the Cell3Ditor project is to develop a 3D printing technology for the industrial production of multilayer multimaterial ceramic devices such as Solid Oxide Fuel Cells. The project will cover research and innovation in all the stages of the industrial value chain: inks formulation, 3D printer development, ceramics consolidation and system integration. The 3D printed power devices will show unfair advantages compared to conventionally manufactured systems including joint-less devices and cost-effective and simplified manufacturing processes.

The project is product-driven and involves five SMEs from five different EU countries (Promethean Particles -UK, 3DCeram -France, FAE -Spain, SAAN EnerGI -Sweden and HyGeAR -The Nederlands) and three research groups: IREC and ULL in Spain and DTU in Denmark.

New European routemap focused on the role of catalysis for a more sustainable energy future

IREC has participated with other institutions, universities and European industries in the development of a roadmap on science and technology in the development of new catalysts for a more sustainable energy future taking into account the entire life cycle of products used, the involved elements abundance and carbon footprint as well as technical and economic efficiency.

Catalysts are key elements in the evolution of this energy scenario. Topics such as chemical energy storage, conversion of electrical energy into chemical energy, renewable hydrogen production, developments from biogas, the new features associated with bio-refineries and solar refineries are considered key pieces in an evolution where the CO2 energy plays a major role as a carbon source.

IREC contributes to improve the design and quality of lighting in the automotive field

The Lighting Group of IREC is currently collaborating with the company LPI (Light Prescriptions Innovators) Europe in the development of an innovative line of front and rear lights for the automotive industry characterized by generating a uniform light pattern across the whole visible surface, taking into account the car body style. This innovation enables wide variety of aesthetics and design possibilities since the light system perfectly blends with the exterior car lines. This system is based on two main columns. On one hand, the ultra-thin Camaleón optics, conceived by LPI Europe, suitable to comply with the usual space restrictions in vehicle designs. On the other hand, the electronics, totally developed by the Lighting Group of IREC and based on LED technology, it is composed by a single LED array with different emission wavelengths by an exclusive control software, all the functionalities of front and rear lights. In short, Camaleón light is a very compact technology that substantially reduces the space within the car devoted to lighting which is especially due to its ultra-compact optical system and its monolithic LED system capable of covering all the car lighting and signalling functions (positioning, brake, blinker, etc.) with a single PCB.
