Ph.D. Student Position in Semiconductor Nanowires for Thermoelectric Applications

The Group Leader of Nanoionics and Fuel Cells is seeking a PhD student to work on a Project devoted to the development of breakthrough concepts for semiconductor nanostructures (basically nanowires) applied to Thermoelectric Generators.

Description: Reusing of waste heat for converting it into electricity is one of the major challenges in the Energy field. This conversion is possible by using thermoelectric materials implemented into thermoelectric generators (TEGs). Moreover, the miniaturization of TEGs becomes an opportunity to power the revolution of the Internet of Things. For this, developing thermoelectric materials compatible with mainstream miniaturization technologies (microelectronics) are a major goal. Recently, silicon nanowires have been proposed as a possible solution although its integration is by itself a cutting edge topic. Phonon scattering occurring in nanostructures allows changing the nature of naturally bad thermoelectric materials such as Silicon.

We are interested in a Ph.D. student highly motivated to study the development of silicon-based nanostructures and their applicability in TEGs. She/he will get experience in hands on deposition and characterization of semiconductor nanowires, as well as a deep knowledge on TEGs. Among the techniques employed will be Chemical Vapor Deposition, HR-TEM, heat conduction techniques or microfabrication strategies.

Requirements: Ph.D. student who is highly motivated  to learn, work in a team, high flexibility and initiative and ability to innovate.
Bachelor and master of Physics / Engineering / Chemistry or similar is required. Experience in semiconductor nanowires and electrical and thermal characterization will be positively evaluated.
Fluent English is mandatory.

We offer: Three years Ph.D student contract. Joining a team of highly qualified and motivated researchers working in the frontiers of knowledge in science and technology.

Incorporation: The candidates should be available by the beginning of 2018.
