Zèfir Test Station


Description

The project Zèfir Test Station consists on developing and setting-up a deep-sea offshore Wind Turbine Test Station off the coast of Tarragona (Spain), that will serve as a laboratory for testing the new technology required in this field so that it can be marketed. This initiative will be one of the most important of its kind and will stimulate the collaboration between major research centres, the Industry and Universities.


Opportunity
  • The installation of wind farms on land is limited by space and conditioned by the visual impact on the landscape.
  • As an alternative, some countries in Northern Europe have started to install wind turbines out at sea.
  • The continental platform of these countries has made possible to install wind turbines in shallow waters and far away from the coast (>20km).
  • However, in most potential sites worldwide, at a distance of >20km the water depths are greater than 50 m; this means that the wind turbines cannot rest on the seafloor, but require a technical solution based on floating platforms.
  • Such deep-water offshore locations require the development of new, highly complex technological solutions that need to be modeled and tested exhaustively before they can be marketed.
  • In order to materialize the potential for offshore wind energy that exists in the world, investments in R+D are required that allow the technology to reach a degree of maturity sufficient for the commercial generation of this type of energy.
  • The business opportunity is estimated at 40,000 MW, which would amount to 100,000 million €, to be installed by 2020.

Objectives

Zèfir Test Station will contribute to:
  • The development of a new, highly complex technology for deep-water offshore wind turbines, which will allow the installation of wind farms far enough from the coast to avoid visual impact on the landscape.
  • Boost the deployment of offshore wind power in southern Europe and worldwide.
  • The progressive reduction of costs in offshore wind farm installation.
  • The increase of the technological credibility of this kind of applications.
  • The increase of the scientific and technological knowledge of the Industry and the involved research centers.
  • The creation of new business opportunities for the companies involved in the project.
  • The setting up of a reference international center, with capacity to boost industrial investments.
  • The creation of a favorable environment to develop university programs, as attraction pole in R&D.
  • Training for suitable profile technicians and workers, in manufacturing, installation, operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms.
