Biography
Dr. Josep Carreras received his B.S., M.S. and PhD. (Cum Laude, with Honors) in Physics from the University of Barcelona. Over his career, he has been involved into the understanding of the electrical and optical properties of Silicon Quatum Dots (QD) for applications in different fields, such as non-volatile flash memories, light emitting diodes and transistors or direct light modulators, and is the inventor of the first direct modulator ever made fully on Silicon, which is able to reach speeds over the GHz range by using a special type of MOSFET with Silicon QD embedded into the gate oxide.
He is also the author of several theoretical studies, conceived to fully understand the optoelectronic properties at the nanoscale, through the development of models and computational codes able to predict the charge transport and luminescence properties of 3D1 nanostructures, as demonstrated by the successful explanation of the physical principle underlying the so-called field effect luminescence.
Carreras has published more than 30 articles in several SCI journals, has filed two patents, participated in more than 15 different projects at a national and international level.
Since June 2009, he is working at IREC, where currently holds an appointment as the Leader of the Lighting Group, leading research in novel concepts for Energy Efficient Lighting, Color Science and Technology, Simulations, Photometry, and Intelligent Lighting with advanced communication and computation functionalities.
He also helped in the definition of the research strategies and infrastructures from the early stages of the Institute and is currently managing the group and supervising several projects in close collaboration with industrial partners.
