Biography

With a PhD. in Chemical Science from the University of Barcelona, he is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Rovira i Virgili University (URV).

He has been a university professor in Tarragona for 25 years; first at the University of Barcelona, and later, at the URV ever since its foundation.

Most of his scientific activity has been centred on energy and energy efficiency since 1985.  Initially, his efforts revolved around heavy fossil fuels and; later, bioenergy. His research work has led him to exploring non-energy uses of lignocellulosic biomass fractions, such as replacing fossil-based phenols with depolymerised lignin to create adhesives. In recent years, his attention has been focused on liquid biofuels (biodiesel) and gas biofuels (synthetic gas) made from the raw materials produced by photosynthesis.
 
He was a visiting researcher at the University of Leeds (UK), Sherbrooke University (Quebec, Canada) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL, Colorado, USA).
 
He is currently Head of the Bioenergy and Biofuel Area at the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC).
