Los fondos de la UE impulsan los proyectos del nuevo vector energético, marcado todavía por la falta de desarrollo y una cuestionada eficiencia.
El Director del IREC, Prof. J.R. Morante menciona las posibilidades de descarbonización que supondría solo la eliminación de las 10 toneladas de hidrógeno gris utilizado en la petroquímica de Tarragona: “En Tarragona se emiten tres veces más de CO₂ que en el resto de Cataluña por la presencia de industria química. La introducción de hidrógeno verde permitiría un 33% de la reducción prevista de dióxido de carbono en el Plan Integrado de Energía y Clima”.

La importancia de este vector energético radica en que permite la descarbonización de usos energéticos difícilmente electrificables.
Albert Tarancón, investigador de Icrea en el IREC y coautor del informe, explica que “de llegar a unos niveles de coste de un entorno de los 2 €/kg, en la próxima década, el hidrógeno renovable sería competitivo tanto con el hidrógeno de origen fósil, como con los combustibles actuales como el diésel o la gasolina, por lo que este nuevo vector energético estaría muy bien posicionado no sólo para el transporte y la industria, sino también para almacenar el sobrante de la producción eléctrica renovable”.
