Development of prototypes for power-to-liquid technologies

  • Energy storage

The production of synfuels using electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a technology that is expected to play a key role for decarbonizing the EU energy system and improving sustainability and circular economy. However, before this technology can be introduced into market, several scientific and technical issues need to be solved.

The POLITE project starts on the 1st of June 2022, and stands for “Development of Prototypes for POwer-to-Liquid TEchnologies”. This project aims to develop two prototypes that we envision as a necessary step to perform more system-level investigations, with a focus in the industrialization of the electrochemical CO2RR to liquid fuels. One prototype is a laboratory-scale multistack electrolyzer for electrochemical CO2RR to syngas, able to attain high CO2 conversion values (> 50%) with faradaic efficiency to syngas > 90%, and the other prototype is a laboratory-scale Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactor. Both prototypes are expected to be tested at laboratory conditions that simulate their future integration in a combined two-step process for electrochemical CO2RR to fuels.

IREC is pleased to host Dr Andrés Alberto García Blanco as a Tecniospring Industry researcher. Andrés Alberto holds an incoming fellowship for two years in the Energy Storage, Harvesting and Catalysis group at IREC under the supervision of Sebastián Murcia. He will develop a professional career within the energy field and benefit from top training in technology transfer.

Tecniospring is ACCIÓ’s international talent programme, which boosts technology transfer processes by offering R&D companies and TECNIO centres 2-year employment contracts to host a researcher. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 801342 (Tecniospring INDUSTRY) and the Government of Catalonia’s Agency for Business Competitiveness (ACCIÓ).
