“El Futur és Ara” conference to chart a sustainable future for Catalonia

Join us at the "El Futur és Ara" conference on 10th June, as we chart a sustainable future for Catalonia, addressing climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable practices.
  • Energy and environment

In response to the urgent climate emergency, a resolute, sustained, and immediate collective action is of the essence. It is with this objective in mind that the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) is delighted to announce its participation in the “El Futur és Ara” conference. This interdisciplinary event is dedicated to fostering the energy transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally considerate society.

The conference will be held on Saturday, 10th June, at 10 a.m. in the Sala Teatre of the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB). Esteemed experts will be presenting an interesting programme of proposals designed to guide the decisions and projects of public administrations and the private sector in Catalonia through 2030. The speakers include Jaume Terrades, Juan Requejo, Cristina Sánchez, Joaquín Nieto, Isabel Pont, Carolyn Daher, Sara Santana, and Martí Pardo. IREC will be represented by its director, Joan Ramon Morante, whose attendance, alongside other experts in topics related to energy and climate change, affirms IREC’s unwavering commitment to the pursuit of sustainable energy practices.

“El Futur és Ara” is an initiative led by the Renovem-nos platform, with the support of several organisations and experts, including IREC, OIKIA, the Association for the Promotion of Public Transport (PTP), the Network for the Conservation of Nature (XCN), Conservació.cat, Greenpeace, REVO Sustainable Prosperity, and the Network of Ambassadors of the EU Pact for Climate and CREAF.

The conference will focus on the goals set for 2030, which include a significant reduction in global CO2 emissions. This is a crucial step to limit global warming to 1.5 °C and prevent feedback loops that could accelerate temperature increases and associated risks. Additionally, the conference will address the necessity to restore a significant portion of nature to ensure ecosystems’ adaptability and resilience to climate change, maintain essential ecosystem services, recover declining biodiversity, and actualise the 30×30 Pact.

The topics of the conference include reducing emissions, consumption, and waste; accelerating the decarbonisation of energy and transport; conserving and recovering biodiversity; ensuring a just transition; planning and accountability; contingency plans in a climate emergency; and promoting frugality, empathy, and happiness.

“El Futur és Ara” aligns with IREC’s commitment to renewable energies and sustainable practices. The conference will serve as a platform for reflection on the challenges we face on our journey to a more sustainable future, while also exploring the opportunities that this paradigm shift can bring to our economy and society.

The event will be moderated by meteorologist Francesc Mauri and environmental activist Carlota Bruna. We extend an invitation to everyone to join us at “El Futur és Ara”, to learn, exchange ideas, and be inspired by our shared vision of a renewable future.
