Energy efficiency, environmental comfort and health in cohousing projects in Barcelona

  • Energy and environment

IREC collaborates with the Public Health Agency of Barcelona (Agencia de Salut Pública) to study the cooperative housing based on right-of-use model, from the point of view of energy efficiency, environmental comfort and health.

The Thermal Energy and Building Performance group of IREC will evaluate the indoor environmental comfort and the energy consumption of three cooperative housings located in Barcelona: La Borda, Princesa and La Diversa, in the framework of the project “Health and Wellbeing impact of cooperative housings based on right of use model”  IREC carry out this project in  collaboration with Housing and Health group of the Agencia de Salut Pública de Barcelona (ASPB), through the Collaborative Agreement signed on May 10th of 2019. The interest of both institutions are to increase the knowledge about how the housing characteristics could affect the inhabitant health and wellbeing, from an energy efficiency and energy poverty point of view.

The current housing emergency situation causes an important public health problem given the large number of people affected and the negative health consequences. One of the answers to the lack of affordable housing that is emerging due to pressure from organized society and the collaboration of some municipalities, is cooperative housing based on right of use. There is a lack of evidence on the health impact of this housing model, and this could be useful to support public policies that promote the development and implementation of this model.

The project is divided in three parts:

  • Collect and synthetize the available research evidence about the relation between cooperative housing and health and wellbeing of their inhabitants. This research has concluded with the following research paper: “The effects of cohousing model on people’s health and wellbeing: a scoping review”.
  • Analyse the impact of cooperative housing projects based on right of use model on the health and wellbeing of their inhabitants.
  • Evaluate the indoor environmental comfort of the households of the cooperative projects in Catalonia, where IREC is participating.

The project “Health and Wellbeing impact of cooperative housings based on right of use model” (PI18/01761) lead by Health group of the Agencia de Salut Pública de Barcelona (ASPB) is financed by Instituto de Salud Carlos III, cofinanced by the European Union (FEDER) and lead by the Housing and Health group of the Agencia de Salut Pública de Barcelona (ASPB).
