Towards the large-scale manufacturing of generation 4b solid-state batteries

Lick-off of SINMATE - Scalable and sustainable pilot line based on innovative manufacturing technologies towards the industrialisation of solid-state batteries for the automotive sector
  • Energy storage

SPINMATE is a Horizon Europe funded project that stands for “Scalable and sustainable pilot line based on innovative manufacturing technologies towards the industrialisation of solid-state batteries for the automotive sector “.

The kick-off meeting of SPINMATE project is taking place today 15th September and tomorrow in Brussels.

SPINMATE aims to demonstrate a scalable, sustainable, safe and cost-effective digital-driven proof-of-concept pilot line, at a TRL6 level, as a first step towards the large-scale manufacturing of generation 4b solid-state battery (SSB) cells and module, in order to support the electrification of the automotive sector. To do so, SPINMATE proposes the development and implementation of innovative and scalable manufacturing and processing solutions. Furthermore, new industry 4.0 and 5.0 concepts are proposed to be applied for the digitalisation of the proof-of-concept pilot line, as well as the assembly and manufacturing processes.

SPINMATE’s Gen 4b SSB cells will create a new industry value chain in Europe towards their commercialisation. This new generation technology will ensure

  • enhanced energy densities, overcoming current LIB limitations,
  • improved safety in both solutions and workers
  • increased sustainable mass production
  • decreased carbon footprint and cost.

The project has a total budget of about 7M€ and will run for 4 years. The consortium is formed by 13 European partners including Avesta Battery & Energy Engineering, ABEE (leader), IREC, Fraunhofer, Toyota Motor or CIDETEC, among other partners.

IREC will be conducting material screening for the cathode to be used for an optimized hybrid cathode electrode. This action is led by Jordi Jacas from the Energy Storage, Harvesting and Catalysis group at IREC. Funded by the European Union.
