Summary

The increased penetration of distributed renewable energy sources driven primarily by sustainability awareness and reduction in cost for the owner is modifying the business model and the operation of the electrical distribution grid. Intelligent storage solutions capable of defining and managing the optimal hybrid solutions integrating a variety of battery storage technologies for each application is a clear market need. These intelligent solutions must deliver optimised power/energy performances to achieve cost-effectiveness and support solid business cases.

The Cell Manager project reenvisions the battery technology developments and its applications that are necessary to ensure the energy transition towards green energy with a safe, stable, flexible, cost-effective and environmentally friendly technical solution. By developing a cell-level technical solution energy storage systems based on batteries have the potential to intertwine their power and energy capabilities within a power conversion platform that brings flexibility and controllability. This approach enables the optimal regulation of the system for a large variety of applications such as stationary storage, grid regulation, electric vehicles, energy generation and its interactions such as grid integration of renewable power systems, deployment of charging stations and provision of residential energy storage. Following a strong commitment to energy transition through the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (Research and Innovation Challenges and Needs of the EU Energy System), the proposed project is well-timed to address a high impact area. This project will result in a cell level converter solution designed to support the green energy transition and hardware/software developments that can enable the rapid and efficient interaction of energy systems with a variety of applications and relevant for many stakeholders.
