IREC and INTERA Group develop digital technologies to optimise energy storage and extend battery lifetime
IREC is collaborating with INTERA Group to develop digital twins of batteries and intelligent monitoring systems based on the Internet of Things (IoT). The technology enables real-time analysis of energy storage systems, helping anticipate battery degradation and optimise their operation.
The solution combines expertise in battery management with advanced modelling capabilities, transforming operational data into actionable insights to improve the reliability and performance of energy storage systems.
By anticipating battery degradation and adapting operation to real-world conditions, the technology helps extend battery lifetime, enhance safety and reduce operating costs. It also supports more efficient resource management, facilitates the reuse of batteries for new applications and promotes the integration of renewable energy sources.
The technology can be applied in industrial environments, electricity grids and energy communities, contributing to more efficient and sustainable electrification. By improving the performance of storage systems, it can also facilitate the deployment of technologies such as electric vehicles, self-consumption and smart grids.
Digital solutions for battery management can play an important role in the energy transition by maximising the use of existing resources and reducing dependence on external suppliers in a strategic sector. The collaboration between IREC and INTERA Group has already led to the deployment of the technology in two real-world environments, marking a step towards its market adoption.
This collaboration demonstrates how research and industry can work together to bring digital technologies into the energy sector, strengthening Catalonia’s capacity to develop innovative solutions for a more efficient, sustainable and competitive energy system.
IREC holds the TECNIO accreditation seal, awarded by the Government of Catalonia through ACCIÓ, which brings together most of the accredited centres in Catalonia and acts as a collective voice for research groups focused on technology transfer.
This case demonstrates how collaboration between research and industry drives the development of digital technologies for the energy sector and strengthens Catalonia’s position in the transition towards a more efficient, sustainable and competitive energy model.
