Development of a new tool to maximise energy production in PV installations
The project CIRSOLAR, led by STERNA in collaboration with IREC and funded by ACCIÓ, has successfully ended.
CIRSOLAR’s goal was to develop a tool to assess the health of existing photovoltaic (PV) installations and determine the optimal timing for their maintenance, minimizing environmental impact while maximizing energy production. As a result of the project, a sensor system has been developed to measure accumulated dirt on PV installations, along with a digital twin to predict their energy production and a calculation model to assess environmental impact and plan maintenance activities.
The Energy System Analytics and Power Systems departments at IREC have contributed to the development of the digital twin to predict energy production using a machine learning model based on data such as solar irradiation, dew point, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, ambient temperature, and wind speed and direction. Additionally, using the data generated by the digital twin, together with the data from the sensor system developed by STERNA, they have developed an environmental impact calculation model to determine the most favourable time to of clean PV installations. This minimises the environmental impact and maximises energy production.
