BATTECH at the Battery Innovation Days 2024

As part of their continued commitment to promoting sustainable mobility, BATTECH, an initiative supported by IREC and Eurecat, showcased its latest research and innovative solutions at the Battery Innovation Days 2024. The event, held at the Hotel Barceló Sants in Barcelona from November 26-27, 2024, offered a unique hybrid experience designed to bring together numerous key players and experts from the battery field to discuss the future of battery R&I in Europe.

The Battery Innovation Days, co-organized by the Key European Batteries R&I Initiatives in partnership with the Batteries 1st and 2nd IPCEI, brings together leading policymakers, scientists and industry representatives to enhance knowledge and encourage exchange around the deployment of cutting-edge technologies in the battery field. This year’s event gathered around 1500 participants (attending both online and onsite), with the participation of 19 exhibitors and 45 speakers ranging from European Commission officials to industry and researchers.

IREC researchers and team participated in the event with a joint stand with Eurecat. The stand attracted more than 50 visitors interested in BATTECH’s projects and their research, innovation and technology transfer capabilities within the battery field. BATTECH encompasses research, development and innovation across the entire value chain of the next generation of electric cells and batteries for the electric mobility, renewable energy and capital goods markets backed by Eurecat and the IREC. This initiative includes the flagship projects of COBRA (led by IREC with a budget of 11.8 million euros) and MARBEL (led by Eurecat with a budget of 11.7 million euros), among others.

Members of the Tech Transfer team at IREC, including Marta Fonrodona, Carles Rubio, and Gabriela Espinosa, as well as researchers from the Energy Storage, Harvesting and Catalysis, the Power systems, the Nanoionics and fuel Cells and the Energy Systems analytics departments attended the event, actively engaging in networking opportunities with national and international experts, public entities, and key stakeholders. They also had the chance to engage in discussions and share progress with experts in the field of battery technology. By building strategic connections and knowledge exchange, the Tech Transfer team aims to cultivate collaborations that drive innovation and support the deployment of advanced energy solutions.

IREC’s involvement in this year’s Battery Innovation Days highlights its commitment to pioneering sustainable solutions that shape the future of energy and mobility. As Dr. Stefan Wolf, senior consultant for innovation at VDI/VDE, remarked, “Countless innovations, from electric mobility to drones to energy systems, rely on batteries. This is why we need to double down on our effort to build the European battery ecosystem”. This statement underscores the importance of initiatives like BATTECH and events such as this, which drive the innovation needed for a more sustainable future.
